Spanish immersion programs are fantastic if you want to learn about a new culture and improve your Spanish-speaking skills! Here, Seattle, WA tutor Paola E.  shares some must-read tips for making the most of your experience One of the ultimate goals of Spanish learners who are committed to becoming fluent is to take the biggest leap and join a Spanish immersion program in a country where Spanish is spoken. Al fin! (At last!) The Spanish they are learning comes to life; they can see it, hear it, and interact in the target language wherever they go. An immersion program is incredibly enriching, however, it is not uncommon for teachers to receive students who, after months (or years) of traveling or even living in a Spanish-speaking country, arent able to speak the language.  The good news is that with dedication and a little planning, this can be avoided, and learners can take their conversational skills to the next level. Below, I share 12 no-brainer tips for those who are committed to making the most of their experience abroad. Before Your Trip 1) Take some Spanish lessons to learn the basics. The more knowledge you have, the faster youll improve when youre abroad. It will allow you to interact with locals from the moment you arrive (and therefore learn more Spanish!). You want to be extremely comfortable with numbers and the alphabet. You’ll be glad you are when you need someone to spell that ridiculously long address for you. 2) Get exposed to the language every day. You can listen to something in Spanish during your commute, as youre doing chores, or even while taking a shower. Make it a point to discover new awesome songs, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and learning apps (Duolingo is great!). 3) Take a Spanish pronunciation class or at least one private pronunciation lesson. This will save you tons of frustration by learning good pronunciation early on. This will also improve your listening skills. 4) Find a Spanish Meetup group in your area and attend at least a couple of times, and practice with native Spanish speakers and other learners. Consider this a warm-up before the real immersion. While Abroad 5) Get out of the Spanish closet, and use it at ALL times! Yes, at first, it WILL be exhausting, but do your best to stick with it. Itll pay off BIG time! 6) Write down new words you want to remember when possible. You can take a picture, write a note on your phone, or go old-school and keep a pocket notebook at hand. 7) Try to surround yourself with as many native Spanish speakers as possible. Some ways of doing so are: Staying with a host family. Signing up for a group physical activity like yoga or dance lessons (yes, even if its just for native Spanish speakers). These are great for meeting people aside from your Spanish classmates, and the lessons are fairly easy to follow. You’ll be surprised how body language compensates for the words lost in translation. Arrange an intercambio de español/Inglés (exchange) with a local Spanish speaker. This is a great chance to discuss the words you have been writing down (see tip #6). 8) Avoid the number-one enemy of every learner abroad: Do NOT use any language other than Spanish. If people you need to talk to can’t speak Spanish, minimize the use of English. I can’t emphasize enough that this is the best thing you can do for your Spanish. Every minute you spend speaking in another language is time stolen from your investment in learning in a Spanish immersion program. 9) Keep your part of the interaction in Spanish even if people respond to you in English. Some locals really want to help you feel more comfortable, and others enjoy practicing their English with foreigners. Resist the urge to switch to English. For instance, instead of asking Cómo se dice to have dinner en español?, you can ask Cuál es la palabra para comer en la noche? 10) Limit yourself to a small travel dictionary or phrase book/phone app, and use it only if extremely necessary. Returning Home 11) Don’t let your Spanish get rusty! Practice every day, continue with your Spanish lessons, and try to arrange an intercambio. If you cant do it in person, you can do so online. 12) Let your Spanish-speaking friends, family members, or coworkers know that youre learning Spanish, and ask them if you can use Spanish with them sometimes. Then, take the initiative, and ask a specific question in Spanish here and there when you both have the time. Enjoy yourself no matter what during the entire learning process! Spanish immersion programs can be an incredibly memorable and valuable experience. You do want people to help you by correcting you, so don’t feel bad. Remember, a learner’s goal, at first, is not so much to have correct grammar, but rather to make oneself understood and to be persistent. Happy learning, amigos! After the submission of Germany at the end of the Great War, the various diplomatic corps that sent a delegation to the summit to draft the Treaty of Versailles imposed extremely heavy sanctions as well as arms control on Germany, feeling threatened by its influence on world affairs during the war. Economic history shows that the sanctions led to rampant inflation, paving the way for the strategic rise of nationalism and a power play by an intellectual elite bent on the subjugation of Europe through questionable ethics and the rise of the imperial German regime.Feudal Diplomacy: the Game of ObligationOne of the most fascinating and complicated means of keeping an equilibrium of power is the complicated web of feudal obligation that characterised much of the Middle Ages. In some cases, the borders of countries changed depending on the allegiance of feudal underlords.The idea was that a smaller lord would put himself under obligation to a feudal overlord. He would provide men and resources, and the overlord would use his greater resources - expanded by the men and taxes of his other underlords - to defend his underlords from threats and help them in times of need. Everything from economics to agricultural labour was somehow embroiled in the feudal system.Though we tend to think of Europe in relation to feudalism, but other cultures had similar systems. Any historian will tell you what an odd cascade of circumstances started the Great War. It has occasionally been compared to a bar fight between pub buddies. The actual crisis seemed at first to be a matter between two nations - or at least, between the emerging Serbio-Yougoslav nationalists and Austria - Hungary.But after the wars of the nineteenth century, countries began forming alliances to promote peace and trade. Unfortunately, by the twentieth century, this system of alliances formed two main blocks in Europe. When the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire was killed, their allies were drawn into the war, each of them bringing their own baggage and enemies, setting off a chain reaction of conflicts that would lead to one of the most gruesome wars in history - one in which even the Holy See took an interest. The interesting thing about the Cold War was that a balance was achieved entirely without diplomacy, but instead with the constant threat of war between Russia / the communist nations and the US / the Western world. The threat of mutually assured nuclear destruction prevented all-out conflict for decades while making a contribution towards advancing technology at an astounding pace.However, true peace wasn’t achieved until the Cuban Missile Crisis forced the two factions to ignore criticism by their more strident members and re-establish lines of communication. Though the Cuban government under Cuban president Castro remained shut off and it only became possible to visit Cuba recently, the events of that day convinced both sides to actually sit down and talk. The body is divided into head, visceral hump and foot. Head has a pair of stalked eyes and two pairs of tentacles.The body is enclosed by protective shell. Unio or fresh water mussel: It is a common bivalve .The outer surface of the shell is marked by numerous concentric linescalled lines of growth. Head is absent. Foot is the locomotory organ. The respiratory organs are the gills. Mytilus or sea mussel: It is the common edible mussel. It is a sedentary form and remains attached to rocks and other solid objects with the help of bunch of adhesive threads called Byssus threads. Pinctada or pearl oyster: They are pearl producing bivalves commonly found in the seas. The valves of the shell are unequal and their free margins are characterized by finger like processes. The foot is reduced. Terredo: It has an elongated soft body covered by a tough mantle. At the anterior end is pair off reduced shells with which the mollusk bores into the wood, turning it into saw dust. Respiration through gills. Loligo: it is a marine edible mollusc.The body is narrow elongated showing two regions the head and the trunk. Octopus: It is a marine bottom dwelling mollusc.The mouth is surrounded by 8 long arms bearing two rows of suckers. Tentacles are absent.

We were introduced to Stephanie, an educational psychologist, and felt what she does would definitely be of interest to our readers. So, Stephanie what do you do in your job? As an Educational and Child Psychologist I aim to understand the cognitive and educational development of children and young people within the context of their home, school and community. Through my in-depth knowledge of learning and teaching, I enhance understanding of how children and young people think, learn and behave. I aim to bridge the gap between theory/research and practice, so as to maximise learning for all pupils! Different modes of teaching and learning are most effective for different people. Working with you, your child and your child’s tutor, I aim to gain a clearer understanding of your child’s strengths and abilities, which will help us understand the teaching and learning strategies that are most effective for them. Using positive psychology, we will build upon your child’s strengths to maximise their learning and help them reach their full potential. When might I want to use one? You may want to use an Ed Psych in a number of different instances When you would like to learn more about your child’s learning style and how the environment (and their tutoring experience) can be adapted to maximise outcomes. When you have concerns about your child’s development and you would like to explore these concerns further so as to understand how to help them and adapt their environment to maximise their development. This could be related to their learning, cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural development. When your child has a specific difficulty and you would like to learn strategies to help them progress further, such as dyslexia, AD/HD or dyscalculia. How does the process work? Following an initial meeting, I will carry out an assessment of your child’s abilities and the current learning environment. This will in turn enhance our understanding of how your child learns best; what they can do to maximise their achievement, and what you and their tutor can do to support them. The above may take place within one meeting or may involve a more in-depth assessment, which would be tailored according to the situation. What is the cost of hiring an educational psychologist? All maintained schools in the UK have a link EP that works directly with schools; you may be able to request that your child sees their school EP. However, this can sometimes prove difficult, as schools may have different priorities. LOI English Teachers Kathryn Johnson Getting to know people from all over the world is one of the perks of working and learning online. It is fun to talk to people with different backgrounds, that is why many of the LOI English teachers say that they love meeting new people and  Kathryn Johnson is an example of that.Kathryn is from the United States and has a degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California. Nowadays, she is living in Chile and teaches English to people from around the world. Normally, her students are from Brazil, Russia and Japan, but she has also taught English in Chile in a government program to help students improve their TOEIC score.She told me that she had lived in Chile in 2005, when she got her certification to teach English, but then she moved back to the US.  Kathryn believes that going where you feel happy is the most important thing, so when she was feeling stuck, she decided to move back to Chile to live by the shore, improve her Spanish and teach English.Kathryn said tha t she believes that the issues that Spanish and Portuguese speakers have are very similar and she uses her knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese to help those students. When I asked her what type of materials she normally uses to allow students to understand abstract concepts or to improve their knowledge of the language, she confessed that she is not that good with book references and said  that she usually refers to movies to explain some concepts to her students.For example, one time, when she was trying to explain the meaning of the word mumble, she used the movie Dick Tracy, that has a character named Mumbles, played by Dustin Hoffman, that mumbles a lot! According to her, watching movies can also help improve the understanding and proper use of phrasal verbs.She also said that cultural differences sometimes can get in the way of learning English. That is why she tries to incorporate cultural aspects in the learning process, making sure to explain or give references of movies tha t can help students know more about the culture of English speaking countries and therefore be able to better assimilate her teachings.Kathryn is very easy to talk to and our conversation was pure fun. 4 Problems You Face While Living Alone Image via Pexels The choice to live alone is easy for some and difficult for others, with a myriad of circumstances and reasoning influencing the decision. Perhaps there’s a need for greater independence and self-sufficiency or the desire to break away from the bustle of living with other people. Whatever the reason may be, living alone opens the door for more freedom, however, there can also be greater problems as well. Are you currently living alone? Dealing with a problem that exclusively relates to being alone? Unsure of how to fix it? These four solutions will make you feel better about living by yourself and help you in the long run! 1. Balancing Expenses: Living alone means that there’s no one to split the expenses of living with you, such as rent, water, electric, groceries, cable/internet, etc. Because of this, some people who live alone may have a difficult time effectively balancing their budget. The solution? Get a binder, notebook, or use a Word doc on your computer to create a list of everything you spend and what needs to be paid each month, along with your monthly income. Include things like a phone bill, a car payment, insurance payment, gas, groceries, student loans, electric, water, etc. Add up the total amount that you either currently pay or estimate that you will pay, then deduct this from your monthly income. Do you have enough cushion room to relax or are you cutting it too close? 2. More Responsibility: Because there is no one around to wake you up if you sleep through your alarm or cook you dinner if you’re having a tough day, you ultimately have more responsibility, which means relying on yourself to get the job done (whatever the “job” is). Part of this responsibility is about time-management and the other is about having a backup plan. The solution? Practice better time management for certain areas that you’re having difficulty with. Perhaps you aren’t the best about eating proper meals every day because you’re busy with work and school. Instead of skipping a meal or opting for another box of hot pockets, try meal prepping your meals on a day when your workload isn’t as heavy! Make your breakfasts, lunches and dinners for the week using similar, simple ingredients to ensure that you have a full belly and good energy to take over the world! Image via Pexels 3. Loneliness: Everyone can experience feelings of isolation and loneliness in their lifetime, especially if you are living alone. Sometimes having close friends you hang out with regularly or family that visits frequently just isn’t enough. Sometimes you want someone to be able to rant to in the room right next to you or to binge watch some Netflix on a Friday night. The solution? Find fun ways to get yourself out of your apartment or dorm to help combat the feelings of loneliness. Dabney Frake of Apartment Therapy  suggests, “Create structured ways to leave the house and regularly interact with others sign up for yoga classes or join a book club. Host regular dinner parties, or even low-key television watching sessions with another person who shares your love of  Game of Thrones.”   4. Fear for Safety: Without the company of someone else in your home, the fear of something dangerous happening is real. Despite the safe location you may be in, the number of locks you may have on your door, etc., the paranoia of being in danger can be tough to deal with when you don’t have someone else to help protect you. The solution? Acknowledge your fears and find ways to combat them. Maybe you’re scared that someone is  still  going to break into your home at night. Get an alarm system or security cameras put outside your door and in important places throughout your home! Perhaps you’re fearful that something may happen to you and no one will know for long periods of time, get a dog or establish a system with your friends or neighbors to regularly check in with each other! Living alone can be the most freeing and rewarding decision to make, but it can also be lonely, isolating and scary. While there are specific problems you may deal with while living alone, none of them are deal-breakers or worth you living with people if you don’t want to. There’s always a solution to a problem, no matter what it may be! At the end of the day, just remember that as long as you’re happy, any problem can be conquered. As always, good luck!
